Outside Lands

So this past weekend I went to a 3 day music festival at Golden Gate park in San Francisco.

Jack White was there with his new band "The Dead Weather", and they were without a doubt one of the most captivating performances there. They may not have been my favorite band of the festival, but they completely owned the stage.

I've been re-watching some of the videos on youtube, and did this doodle in the meantime...

Sketches!

Recently, we had a mini comic-convention at DreamWorks where a bunch of amazing artists set up booths and showed off their personal work.
In preparation for the con, I had a number of "sketchbooks" printed off consisting of work from my blog and sketchbooks.
The PDI-Con (as it was called) has passed, and I have some left over.
If anyone is interested, I'm selling them for $10 a book.
Each book is 27 pages and comes with a free postcard!
If you would like one, please email me at spguy_25@yahoo.com, and we'll work out the details!

Ps--Just went to my first WonderCon in San Francisco---boy was it inspiring!!

Out With The Old, In With The New...

I was having a difficult time figuring out how I wanted this villain to look, but I think I'm finally happy with this guy...

Some expressions for the Janitor. I think he might look a little older here than I want him to be...

Every Bar needs a Tender...
Not quite sure who this guy is, but for some reason...I kinda like him.

Seeing as how we're well on our way through January, and February is fast approaching, I thought it was time to get Santa off the top of my page.

These are some sketches I've been doing for a personal project I'm working on. I'll post more as I have them...

Good Vs. Evil

This is just something I was working on a while back that I never got around to posting.
The idea is that this angel and devil that are always competing with each other to accomplish some sort of task...
Despite all of the devil's efforts, the angel usually comes out on top.  Sort of a "roadrunner/coyote" type of thing...

DUCK Show and Totoro

Now that some of the dust has settled and I've had some time to breathe again, I thought I'd post some of the work from the two galleries I was involved in; the DUCK!!! show (at D-Structure through September) and the Totoro Forest Project, which took place last Saturday at PIXAR.

These are the pieces I submitted for the DUCK gallery (and I hope to post some other work and photos soon)...

...And this is the piece that I submitted to the Totoro Forest Project (unfortunately I don't have a decent photo of it framed, but hopefully I will be able to get one...

DUCK!!! Gallery Show

The past few months, some friends and I have been busy putting together a gallery show in SF. The show was concieved as a way for us to get together and have some fun while showcasing our creative exploits outside of our daily work.  The theme of the show is centered around the simple, yet iconic rubber duck and features a broad array of styles and mediums. It was really a blast to be a part of.

If any of you are in the area (Lower Haight St) on Friday Sept 5th, please stop by!  We'd love to see you there.

BigToe

In light of all the recent buzz about possible bigfoot findings and what have you, I thought I'd revisit an old comic strip character of mine, "BigToe".  He's your typical legendary, elusive, forest dwelling gorilla-man, with the slight distinction of having extremely large... big toes.

Magazine

I just got some copies of my first official magazine illustration mailed to me, and I thought I'd post it up...
I posted the actual illustration a while ago, so to see it just scroll down.
I'm pretty happy with the printing though -- even the design and typeface of the page next to it works well together.
It's fun to see my work take up a whole page in an actual publication!
Woo hoo!

Lookin Good...

I'm not gonna lie--
I've been pretty intrigued by the carwreck that is Amy Winehouse
as she's been making all of her graceful appearances in the media.
One of those "so bad you can't look away" sort of deals.

Well, I just came across this photo of her (which is by far not one of her worst ones),
and for whatever reason had the urge to draw it.

So here it is.

"Through the Looking Glass"

This is an illustration I was commissioned to do for an article titled "Through the Looking Glass" in Lexpert magazine (images shown with permission from Lexpert).  To sum up, the article is about lawyers leaving their big time firms to go work for themselves from home, and the difficult transition from one to the other.  They told me off the bat that they wanted sort of an "Alice in Wonderland/falling down the rabbit hole" feel to the illustration, so I just went from there.

I thought I'd show the stages, which were:
Thumbnails
Rough Sketch
Color Comps
and
Final.

I had a great time working on the illustration.
Hope you enjoy!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Thought I'd celebrate by painting the holiday's new mascot ;)

Friday, November 02, 2007

Well, I can't remember exactly how this one came about other than that it began as a conversation I was having with my brother and my cousin. Something about protest groups, and how sometimes it seems that they'll find anything to raise a stink over. The idea of a group walking around somewhere with signs that say "Save Sasquatch" seemed like a funny (and not even all that far-fetched of an) idea to me. So it's been floating around in my head until I could finally put it on paper...er...pixels.

I was thinking about blurring out sasquatch into a barely recognizeable blob, since most of the "pictures" documenting his existence are blurry. But I wasn't sure if it would come across right.

Anyway, all that for a stupid idea...
There ya go.

The Terrible Tentacled Tickler

This is a drawing I did for the latest Fish Barrel (blog) challenge. The topic was "Sailors vs. Sea Monsters". My monster is known by sailors as "The Terrible Tentacled Tickler". It kills it's prey by catching them in it's tentacles, tickling them so they laugh uncontrollably, and then dragging them below the water while they are laughing, thereby drowning said victims. It is a formidable adversary indeed.

*As a side note, I have lately been inspired by the art of Nate Wragg (blog linked at the right), so any resemblance between my work and his is purely out of admiration/exploration.

Chimp drawing no. 2

Ok, so i guess a little explanation for the chimps might not hurt.
The scene I'm doing at work has to do with chimps. To get some good expressions i started looking up chimp photos on google and corbis. The chimp below is "loosely based" on a photo I came across, or inspired by it anyway. The chimp above is actually done directly from a photo that someone took where they actually dressed it up in a suit and tie. I just had to draw it the second i saw it.....
and there you have it.
oh, and there may be more chimps on the way. these guys are really fun......

Get Inspired

Every now and then I go through a period when I just feel like the last thing I want to do is draw. Usually during these times, I find that if I try to force it I can't seem to produce anything worth the paper it's drawn on, and I just get more and more discouraged.
I've found that the best thing to do during these times is to get inspired. Look at art books, surf blog sites, look at things that are outside of your own little "box", and before you know it you will be itching to create.
I've recently added some new links to my page, that are not only inspirational in and of themselves, but also contain links upon links of inspirational artists and their work.
In this day and age, this stuff is so easily accessible, all we have to do is sit down at a computer and type in a name. The rest will just bring itself to you.

Oh, and I also added a few newer pieces that were part of my Senior BFA gallery last month.

Drawing at the Airport

I love the airport. It's a good time to find a spot, sit back, pull out the ol' sketchbook and a pen--and do some hardcore spying on people. Here's some people I drew on my last visit to the airport....

The Pack of Wolves

The objective of this project was to design a pack of wolves, and to do a landscape painting which included the pack. In the pack, there was supposed to be a "jokester" wolf, a blind wolf, and an older wolf. In preparing for the project I watched a documentary called "Living with Wolves", and was surprised to see just how gentle and family oriented they could be. They operate on a "class" system with one wolf being in charge of the others (The Alpha Wolf). The Alpha Wolf calls the pack together, leads them around, and even designates when the other wolves are going to eat. Many times this mostly effects the "Omega Wolf", or the wolf with the lowest ranking of the pack. Many things can factor into who becomes the Alpha wolf, and who becomes the Omega wolf, but it never seems to be based on one specific thing.

Anyway, the documentary actually commented on one wolf who actually played the role of a "Jokester" to alleviate tension in the group. I thought that was pretty interesting....

In preparation of the landscape painting I did a couple landscape color studys just to get myself thinking in those terms. I think some of those actually came out stronger than the final painting.

Hope you dig!

The Venetian Pickpockets

These designs are based on a story about 3 kids who are pickpockets in 1900's Venice. They are overseen by a corrupt priest who runs a pawnshop out of his confessional, and keeps the earnings for himself.....kinda strange, but there it is. The designs are still a work in progress, and i plan on taking these further, as time permits......I'll also include some of the thumbnails for good measure......enjoy!
